It’s Time
Director / Choreographer / Performer / Producer / Editor / Sound Engineer
In loving memory of Carol Susan Sokolowski.
Invited to perform at her second showcase with RAW, this time in Charlotte, NC, Dana created and rehearsed this piece in 2 weeks with her close friend and dance collaborator, Sabastian Wilson. After the recent passing of her mother in the months prior, Dana desired to meet her grief on the dance floor and share it, heal from it, and transform it on stage. The pair were invited back to Atlanta to perform this piece again in February 2020.
At the time, Dana was recovering
from a recent toe surgery. She entered the studio one Sunday to discover movement in freestyle, then entered into the creative contract with Sabastian and choreographed the piece in four sessions with him that week. The two rehearsed the piece for a week and Dana invited fellow friend and choreographer Christopher McIntosh to watch and provide feedback. Dana made the decision to perform her piece barefoot, and both her dance partner, and the movement carried her through without pain.
Dana collaborated with fellow filmmaker friend Billy Tisano to find a DP based in Charlotte. The three of them drove out to Charlotte and on the night of the performance, Billy, Sebastian, Shawn and Dana’s father became fast friends and commemorated a special evening to celebrate Dana’s mother.
Artist Statement
“When you don’t love me
When you don’t need me
When you don’t want me
Darlin’ it’s time.”
This piece investigates the many different relationships that any one human can have with death as a concept, a figure, an entity, a space, a place and a person, as they experience the array of emotions that tumble under the gargantuan rock of grief.
